A 42-year-old man is dead after the moped he was operating crashed in Kailua early today.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the man was traveling east on Akaakaawa St. at the intersection of Akaakoa St. in Keolu Hills around 2:45 a.m. today when he lost control and left the roadway, veering onto a sidewalk and colliding with a tree before being ejected from his moped.
The man was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said the man was in “extremely critical condition” upon their arrival and was transported to an area hospital after paramedics rendered advanced life-saving measures at the scene.
The man later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Police said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role.
This is the 15th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 12 at the same time in 2021.
An investigation continues.
