KRYSTEN PEEK: I’m Krysten Peek here at the United Center on press row for the Midwest Regional Final, where number one Kansas defeated number 10 Miami 76 to 50 to punch a ticket to the Final Four. Kansas fans came out in full force. And it felt like a home game at Allen Fieldhouse.
It was a back and forth battle in the first half, with Miami leading by 6 at halftime. Kansas put 3 separate players on Cameron McGusty to try to slow him down. He had 14 points in the first half and 18 points in the loss.
The momentum of the game shifted for Kansas five minutes into the second half when Christian Brown made a corner 3 to give the Jayhawks the first lead of the second half. After that point, KU went on a 14-2 run to extend the lead to 12. And Miami going to get anything going offensively.
Kansas held Miami to just 15 points in the second half. Ochai Abaji led the Jayhawks with 18 and added 4 steals. And big man David McCormick finished with 15 points in the win. This is the Jayhawks’ 16th time to the Final Four and the fourth trip under head coach Bill Self. Kansas will play number two Villanova on Saturday.
