IRVINE, Calif. – Leon Czarnikau of the Concordia University Irvine men’s tennis team turned in quite a stretch over his last three matches.
For his efforts, the Berlin, Germany native has been named the PacWest Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.
This marks the second straight time that a CUI Eagle has been tabbed for this honor. Concordia senior Jan Simon earned that title last week as the Eagles rose to the occasion and have now rattled off four victories in their last five matches.
Czarnikau earned three wins at the No. 1 singles spot for the Eagles this past week against Michigan Tech, No. 7 Washburn and PacWest conference foe Biola.
Two of his wins at the top singles position were against nationally-ranked foes. His victory in the Biola match helped catapult the Green and Gold past their nearby rivals as CUI won a close match, 4-3.
He and teammate Mike Jansen also combined to win the No. 1 doubles match against Michigan Tech, which helped the Eagles secure the doubles point that day as well.
The Eagles are back in action this Thursday at home against Hawaii Hilo as part of a doubleheader with the women’s tennis squads. The men play at 10 a.m. with the ladies scheduled to start at 2 p.m on CUI’s campus.
